Amandla (pronounced UH-MAND-LA) was inspired by Miles Davis' 1989 album, "Amandla," which means "power" in both Zulu and Xhosa. The phrase "Amandla Awethu!" (Power to the People!) was often shouted at anti-apartheid rallies in South Africa. Amandla is also the title of a documentary about the role of music in the anti-apartheid movement, Amandla!: A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony.
